Igbo Leaders Reveal Cause Of Boko Haram Insurgency

Following the unabated acts of terrorism and kidnapping being perpetrated across the country by the Boko Haram sect, leaders of thirteen Igbo socio-political groups have come out to state the cause of the Islamist militant group.

The groups which include Igbo Leaders of Thought, South East Elders Forum, Igbo Youth Movement, Movement for the Emancipation of the Sovereign Republic of Biafra, Ohaneze Overseas Forum, Ohaneze Youth Alliance, Igbo Traders Congress, Igbo Women Assembly, Igbo Students Congress, South East Professionals, South East/South South Alliance, Civil and Human Right Forum and World Igbo Diaspora Congress blamed the emergence of the Boko Haram sect on the introduction of Sharia Law during the administration of former Governor Sani Yerima in Zamfara State.

Through a communique released after their meeting, leaders of the groups also expressed support for President Goodluck Jonathan in the face of mounting criticism over his handling of the campaign against the insurgency.

The groups also accused unidentified persons whom they described as “protectors” of the Boko Haram sect of blackmailing the President in the foreign media.

They stated that Boko Haram would not have emerged if Yerima had not introduced Sharia Law in Zamfara State in 2000.

“This Government did not create this Islamist insurgency.The government have suffered attacks from protectors and sympathizers of Boko Haram, who at one time threatened to drag the head of the army to the International Criminal Court at the Hague.

“The deliberate attempt to brand the government as weak and inept while pretending to conveniently forget that some people inspired this madness by forcefully attempting to introduce a religious code 14 years ago, is wicked and devilish.

“The Boko Haram boys who were probably teenagers 14 years ago, when Sharia code was launched, are now only trying to help former Governor Sani Yerima of Zamfara complete what he started in year 2000,” parts of the communiqué read.

While concluding their statement, the groups claim that the Boko Haram insurgency was targeted at regime change in the country. 

It could be recalled that the Boko Haram sect has attacked the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja twice this year.

After both attacks, the terrorists group also kidnapped more than 276 schoolgirls at the Government Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State.

Only few hours ago, what many people believe to be bomb explosions rocked a market place in Jos, Plateau State. Though no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, it is believed to be carried out by the Boko Haram sect.
