Day D'banj Goofed

Day D'banj Goofed

D’banj is in the news. Not for music though. No. But for his new found advocacy for agriculture.

Watching him on national television during the World Economic Forum, he cut a princely picture of success. His presence must have inspired lots of Nigerian youths. Until he opened his mouth. Until he spoke about agriculture. Then he misfired and goofed.

* D'Banj the Koko Master

D’banj spoke. He talked about agriculture. About wasting potentials in agriculture. Then he added that the youths can as well be as successful as he is through agriculture. Good. Well thought out D’banj.

But do you really believe that crap yourself? Seriously? Given Nigeria’s agricultural sector? Maybe for the cameras!

It’s on record that Dangote’s success is tied to a loan provided by a relation and of course, his ingenuity and hard work. Now, how many Nigerian youths down the rung ladder can boast of such “affluent” relation? Why are the Microfinance and agric banks not giving loans? How many youths actually get these loans?

How many subsidized fertilizers and even improved seedlings get to farmers at the rural areas? What incentives are put in place to inspire youths into agriculture? Would a successful farmer not do the trick here rather than the Eja Nla singer? How many successful farmers do we even have in the country today- at least one at the level of D’banj…And he expects us to believe that hook? Not until these concerns and even more are sincerely addressed. A good product will always find its market, irrespective of branding.

D’banj can tell us anything but agriculture. Let him leave the gimmick of agriculture and Koko farms to the Minister, who has his work cut out for him. Let D’banj go back to his music. That’s what endeared him to us. Let him rediscover his musical dexterity. Let him give us good music, not the gibberish we get these days.
