54 of 136 Girls From Latest Boko Haram Video Identified by Chibok Parents

54 of the 136 abducted girls shown in the latest Boko Haram video have been identified by their parents and fellow students who managed to escape their captors.

The information was contained in an official statement from the Borno State government and included the names of the identified girls. The state governor Kashim Shettima confirmed that the young girls shown in the latest Boko Haram video released on Monday, May 12, were indeed among the schoolgirls abducted on April 14 from the dormitories of the Government Secondary School, Chibok.

Parents of the abducted girls, four escapees, fellow students, teachers, security men and some state officials, led by Chief of Staff, Government House, Abubakar Kari, viewed the video at the Government House in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State.

According to eyewitnesses, the parents wept and screamed at the sight of their daughters and expressed anger that the girls had been forced to wear concealing Islamic dress.

The identification exercise still continues at the Government House.

In the video, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau appears separately from the girls. He says the girls may be released in exchange for the release of terrorists who serve their prison time, adding the girls have been "liberated" by converting to Islam.

The girls are shown wearing full-length hijab and reciting Quranic verses. Three of them are interviewed.

It is worth noting that not all of the abducted girls are shown in the video. Some speculate that a number of the girls shown were not from Chibok but among those kidnapped from other Borno villages. Others say this might prove the theory that the girls have been split into groups.
