Hashtag #BringBackOurGirls Hits 1 Million Tweets, Over 150k Instagram Posts

#BringBackOurGirls has become the most used hashtag on Twitter in Nigeria this year with over a million tweets.

This hashtag is used on social media as a way of demanding the rescue of over 200 female studets abducted by Boko Haram on April 14, 2014 in Chibok Borno State. The hashtag has become viral in Nigeria and received international attention in the last seven days.

Ibrahim Abdullahi, a lawyer in Abuja, was one of the first to use #BringBackOurGirls.

"Initially, this was not a coordinated campaign. It was a number of individuals in Nigeria tweeting to raise awareness in the hope that the international community would eventually take notice," Abdullahi told the BBC.

The hashtag is also very popular on Facebook and Instagram, receiving over 150,000 posts on the latter. It has been posted by a number of global celebrities and personalities including the first lady of the United States Michelle Obama, actress Angelina Jolie, Queen of Pop Madonna and pop singer Chris Brown.
