Nigerian Military Says No Terrorist Attack On Maiduguri
Major-General Chris Olukolade, Director of Defence Information, has released a press statement maintaining the Maiduguri metropolis, capital of Borno State, was not attacked by insurgents, but rather Nigerian Army troops launched a counter-attack on a group of terrorists.
Maj.-Gen. Olukolade also denied attacks on local universities and barracks. At about 2 a.m. on Saturday, the military assaulted a group of insurgents suspected of attacking Margimari and other villages in the outskirts of Maiduguri and of killing four persons.
In the press release, Olukolade also commented on related terrorism-fighting developments in various areas of Plateau State. A range of arms and ammunition were confiscated, and valuable information gained. Also, a Chadian has been taken into custody by the Multinational Joint Task Force for cooperating with the terrorist group.
Meanwhile, Olukolade reported, eight persons, most of whom are foreigners, have been taken into custody in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, in the light of recent Nyanya bombings. It will be recalled that two unsolved terrorist attacks have shaken the Nigerian capital in April. Terrorists stroke almost in the same spot twice - the Nyanya suburb of Abuja - taking lives of over a hundred Nigerians and injuring several hundred.
In conclusion, Olukolade stated, peace-restoring mission is currently ongoing in the North Central states of Nigeria to curb the armed gangs activities in the region.
