Whistle Blowers In Lagos Will Soon Be Protected By Law

Witnesses of serious events and whistle-blowers will be protected according to a new paragraph to be added to the law of Freedom of Information in Lagos.

The State Government of Lagos admitted that it is working on a new passage that will be added to the law in order to protect people who are in the knowledge of sensitive information.

According to Folami Olohuntele, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political and Legislative Powers Bureau, the new law will be created as a part of Freedom of Information Law, that has just been on the very verge of being submitted to Lagos state House of Assembly.

Olohuntele said that this law was suggested in the communiqué that had been issued at the Executive/Legislative Parley held in Lagos.

He added that: “The bureau has facilitated meetings where matters are tabled for effective cohesion and clarity which often forms part of the state policies and legislative proceedings of the Assembly.”

He noted that the final version of the bill would be soon presented in the Lagos State House of Assembly, and the FOI act itself is yet to be domesticated in Lagos.

According to him, in the period of 2013-2014 there had been 9 laws passed and accented to by the current Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola. Some of these laws included the anti-smoking law, cremation law, Law on Appropriation Ammendment, Ibile Oil and Gas Corporation law.

It was also added that the Lagos State Anti-terrorism Bill submitted in 2012 has still been waiting for the second reading.
