Police Officer Killed As Gunmen Attack Checkpoint In Nasarawa

Unknown gunmen on attacked a police checkpoint in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Friday night, killing a mobile police officer, Jonathan Simon, while another was shot in the leg.

According to report, the gunmen numbering about 6 ambushed the a police check point at about 9 p.m. through a nearby bush behind a government secondary school and started shooting at the police officers who were conducting a stop and search a few meters away from a mobile police barracks along Akwanga-Lafia.

The deceased's wife Janet Simon, was told of the death of her husband on Saturday morning while she was in the market where she fries and sells local cake, masa.

The incident was confirmed by the state commissioner of police, Idris Mohammed, through a text message.

The police spokesperson in Nasarawa, Ismaila Numan, also confirmed the attack.
