About 40 gunmen yesterday attacked Maru area of Faru town, Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State killing two children of a Health Officer, Mallam Nasiru Maccido Maradun.

The mother of the deceased children was also injured as she attempted to save their lives.

The unidentified gunmen who were armed with dangerous weapons first went to a nearby police station in the area to search for policemen who they claimed had been preventing their operation.

Another source however said they had gone to the police station to rescue their members not knowing that they were not being detained there.

The gunmen opened fire on the kids when their father whose house was adjacent to the police station tried to escape from the area following the commotion. Their mother narrowly escaped death and is now receiving treatment in the hospital.

The armed men were said to have woken everybody up with their loud noise before chasing residents out of their houses and  setting them ablaze.

According to an eye witness, the gunmen were on a reprisal attack, following the killing of five of their members by the police recently.

Confirming the incident, the Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawal Abdullahi said that the police in the state were investigating the matter and the culprits will be arrested and brought to justice.
