Okonjo-Iweala and Dangote Among World's 100 Most Influential People
Time Magazine named the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and the President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote among the 100 world’s most influential people in 2014.
The magazine named most influential people in several categories including Leaders, Icons, Titans, Artists and Pioneers.
Okonjo-Iweala was listed in the category of 100 most influential leaders that also recognized U.S. President Barack Obama, Secretary of State, John Kerry along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra.
The magazine referred to Okonjo-Iweala as “Guardian of Nigeria’s profile funds”, and also noted the fact that her influence became visible when she was campaigning for relief of Nigeria debt in 2005 when she was Nigeria’s Minister of Finance. That deal involved $18-$35 mln debts written off and the country got back a deal of amazing loans.
The Time magazine also noted that though her job made her a legend, her job still remains one of the toughest due to the fact that she is responsible for tens of billions of dollars that Nigeria earns yearly from oil to be distributed wisely among all key sectors.
The magazine said: “Ngozi has made corruption her enemy and stability her goal. She is fiercely intelligent, everyone wants her to work with them.”
The category Titans featured the name of Aliko Dangote among the names of Beyonce, Pony Ma – founder of Tencent Inc, probably one of the largest internet companies in China; Hillary Clinton and Serena Williams.
He was described as: “Africa’s richest man who does good, in addition to doing well.” He was also mentioned as the leader looking for ways to “bridge the gap between private business and public health.”
