Much Ado Over Lavish Gold-plated iPhones For Guests At Jonathan's Daughter’s Wedding

The wedding celebration between President Goodluck Jonathan’s daughter, Faith and Godswill Edward, ended yesterday with a Thanksgiving service in Abuja, leaving on its trail a dust of controversy.

UK-based jewelry designer Malivelihood had posted samples of gold-plated iPhones lavishly customized as gifts for guests at the white wedding ceremony of President Goodluck Jonathan's adopted daughter.

This has led to an outrage as many Nigerians have faulted the show of affluence and also questioned the unconscionable use of public funds.

While the presidency has denied giving out the phones as souvenirs, the designer has admitted making 10 gold-plated iPhones for the President’s daughter, claiming they were merely his own gifts to the president.

He also said they hadn’t even reached the beneficiaries yet because they were too busy.

However, a cursory look at Malivehood's Twitter timeline showed he had been deleting recent updates. He has since deleted the photos and Instagram posts where he boasted about how he got the contract to design the customised items.

Recall that the president had been accused of ordering customized iphones to mark Nigeria’s independence anniversary at a cost of N662 million.
