Court dissolves 16-year-old marriage

A 16-year-old marriage between one Yusuf Bature and his wife, Amina was on Friday dissolved by a Grade 1 Area Court in Aso Pada, Mararaba, Nasarawa State over wife battering.

Amina had on the 6th of January dragged her husband to court, claiming that he was always abusing her and beating her with the stick he uses in controlling his cows.

She told the court, "He always beat me with cow stick and has also sold my property without my consent. Two days ago, he carried the cow stick, as usual, to beat me and I ran to the court. I am no longer interested in the marriage, the court should separate us."

In his defence, Bature said he had tried on countless occasions to settle the differences between them but all his efforts proved futile. He asked the court to grant him custody of their daughter, and to order Amina to pay him N150,000 in compensation.

The presiding officer of the court on Islamic matters, Malam Danladi Musa dissolved the marriage, asking Amina to return the N6,600 Bature paid in  dowry.

He also ordered the court registrar to give a certificate of divorce to Amina while he asked her to hand over the custody of their seven-year-old daughter to Bature.
