Gunmen Kill 5, Burn Houses In Gidan Sule Village, Nasarawa
Unidentified gunmen early yesterday invaded Gidan Sule, a small village near Kadarko town of Nasarawa State at the boundary with Benue State, where no fewer than five persons were killed in an attack alleged by residents to have been carried out by persons suspected to be Fulani.
The villagers said the invaders came around 6:00 am with sophisticated weapons and machetes, killing and burning houses.
A large number of residents fled to Kadarko and Yelwata in neighbouring Benue State.
A displaced person said three young men and a woman were killed and not less than 10 houses were burnt, but Peter Igbache, a Tiv youth leader said his organization, Tiv Youths Association (TYO) received reports of five persons killed.
"The Fulani people came as early as 6am. They killed five people and injured several others. They also burned houses. The whole of Gidan Sule was burned down," Igbache told Daily Trust.
But the Nasarawa State secretary of the Miyetti Allah, a Fulani socio-cultural group, Mohammed Hussaini, told Daily Trust that he could not confirm the involvement of Fulani in the invasion.
Rather, he said his association received reports about three days ago that a group of Tiv youths stormed a Fulani village near Gidan Sule, killed three nomads and rustled about 70 cows.
"Tiv boys killed three Fulani people including a boy, and with the help of their brothers in Yelwata, they rustled about 70 cows three days ago. But I can’t confirm if there was any retaliation now," Hussaini said.
Tiv youths in Yelwata and Kadarko stormed the Lafia-Makurdi road soon after news of yesterday’s killing spread. They barricaded the road for hours from as early as 8:00am till about noon in protest over the invasion.
The protest as usual, grounded traffic flow along the road, with vehicles stranded for kilometers on both sides of the road. It took a team of soldiers from Lafia to disperse the protesters.
State police command spokesman, ASP Idrisu Kennedy told Daily Trust that he could not confirm any of the incidents until today when he gets to work.
