18 Armed Robbers Storm Bank In Akwa Ibom
Unknown gunmen suspected to be armed robbers on Wednesday, October 7, raided a branch of First Bank in Ikot Abasi Urban, Akwa Ibom state, The Nation reports.
A police vehicle on its way for the rescue operation somersaulted while in hot chase and a police sergeant died in the process, leaving other officers wounded.
The armed robbers reportedly numbering about 18 stormed the bank at about 11.45am and carted away an undisclosed amount of money.

According to eyewitnesses, the robbers were dressed in military camouflage shorting sporadically into the air on arrival at the bank to scare people away. As the operation was going on, the gunmen loaded piles of cash into a waiting vehicle parked outside the bank. The robbery operation was said to have lasted for an hour.
ASP Cordelia Nwawe, the state’s police public relations officer confirmed the incident, adding that no arrest has been made.

Meanwhile a fake policeman, identified as Joel Ojo, who led the four other men in an operation, said the guns and police ID card which were confiscated by the police on their arrest were given to him by a policeman.
He said the officer, who is a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) was attached to the police force headquarters in Abuja. He gave his name simply as Muhammed.
