The Kano-bound bus was completely destroyed and other vehicles at the Dan-Borno bus station were also affected in Tuesday's explosion, the BBC reports.
“The bus had just loaded with passengers on its way to Kano when a huge explosion happened inside the bus at 11:40,” said a driver’s union official at the bus station.
According to the Vanguard, a driver’s union official at the bus station said the blast happened after a man put a bag in the boot of the bus and then tried to board the vehicle before he could go through a security check.
Another witness who lives in the area, Waziri Danu, said: “I was at a car wash nearby when I heard a huge explosion and saw volleys of fire and smoke coming from the motor park.
“I and people around rushed to the place and we saw a bus engulfed in flames…. It is not likely if anyone in the vehicle has survived.”
Reportedly, rescue workers at the scene said that all 12 people and a suicide bomber on board the bus were killed instantly. A nurse at Potiskum General Hospital said that 22 people confirmed dead.
Potiskum, the commercial capital of Yobe state, has been hit repeatedly by bombings. This Sunday, February 22, a girl with explosives strapped to her body blew herself up at a crowded GSM market.
Hours after the explosion in Potiskum, a bomb blast rocked one of the busiest motor parks at Kano Line, located at Naibawa Area, along Zaria Road, killing at least 26.
