PDP Undecided on Next Action Against Sokoto Governor, Wamakko
The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is undecided on the next line of action against the Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Wamakko, who on Wednesday called its bluff over his suspension from the party and accused its National Chairman, Bamanga Tukur, of incompetence.
Mr. Wamakko was, last week while on a trip abroad, suspended from the party for anti-party activities and allegedly disrespecting Mr. Tukur.
Upon his arrival at the Sultan Abubakar 111 International Airport and Government House, Sokoto, on Wednesday, the governor told his supporters who came to welcome him that the PDP national chairman was on a mission to destroy the party and Northern Nigeria, and should be replaced by a former national chairman, Ahmadu Ali.
Mr. Wamakko, who was flanked by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, an indigene of the state, also vowed not to recognize the PDP Governors Forum led by Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State.
The Sokoto PDP had earlier distanced itself from the national headquarters, pledging its loyalty to Mr. Wamakko.
When contacted on Mr. Wamakko’s outburst, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, said the party has no plan to punish anybody adding that the suspension it slammed on the governor showed that it is a disciplined party.
“We do not intend to punish anybody, but I think the message has been sent to the whole world that the PDP is a disciplined party,” Mr. Metuh told by telephone on Thursday.
“We do hope that the lessons have been learnt and if so, then PDP will be happy.”
Asked to state in clear terms if Mr. Wamakko would be investigated and punished by the party, Mr. Metuh said no such decision had been taken, but quickly added that even if it does so in future, the governor would be given a fair hearing.
“I have said we will give everybody fair hearing; it is not to punish anybody,” he said.
Prodded to speak further, the spokesman of the ruling party said he had just returned from a trip abroad and therefore could not speak elaborately on the issue.
According to him, Mr. Tukur with whom he could have discussed the issue had travelled to Katsina.
Mr. Metuh, however, expressed joy that PDP has committed supporters in Sokoto, who he said are not prepared to quit the party.
