Goodluck Jonathan Declares Interest To Run For Re-Election

President Goodluck Jonathan officially made the long-awaited declaration to run for re-election in 2015.

Punch reports that the country head made the announcement today, October 23, in Abuja by telling the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders at the Presidential Villa, that he would procure nomination form of the party before the deadline.

It would be recalled that the PDP leadership claimed yesterday that Jonathan, who had been earlier elected as a sole party candidate, must buy the expression of interest and nomination forms by October 30 if the president planned to participate in the elections. Other PDP aspirants heading for the office in the February of the next year were ordered the same, and it was stated categorically that the deadline would not be extended.

Jonathan, who has been expected to declare for months, now ordered the set-up of presidential declaration committee saddled with the responsibility of coming up with a formal programme for his declaration.

The body is led by ex Defence Minister Haliru Bello, while the official procedure of declaration will be held between November 7 and 15.

The PDP primaries are scheduled for December 6.
