‘Life Has Become Cheap In North’ - Governor Yero

Following the incessant attacks by the dreaded Boko Haram sect in the Northern part of Nigeria, the Governor of Kaduna state Mukhtar Ramalan Yero has said life has become so cheap in the North.

Governor Yero made this known on Thursday, while speaking at the inauguration of the newly constituted Board of Trustees (BoT) of Northern Elders’ Council (NEC) in Kaduna.

The Governor Yero who lamented the level of insecurity in the country said: “Life has become so cheap in the North. Innocent people are killed on daily basis without justification. While this temporary setback lasts, our elders must bring their wealth of experience to bear in ensuring that we build stronger bonds of brotherhood in the region.

The governor, therefore stressed the need for leaders and all stakeholders in the region to come together and find a way of bringing “the one time prosperous Northern Nigeria out of the wood.”]

“I challenge the Board of Trustees of the Northern Elders’ Council to collaborate with other stakeholders in the region towards finding amicable solutions to myriads of challenges facing us, especially insecurity, poverty, unemployment and crime,” the governor said.

Meanwhile, the new BoT Chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta, in his acceptance speech, also expressed dismay over security, ethnicity, poor infrastructure, alienation and other social malaise bedeviling Nigeria.

He said in the last three years, Nigerians has had to contend with insurgency and terrorism in some parts of the North.

Kaduna state has been one of the Northern states badly hit by the Islamist group, Boko Haram.

As a result, Kaduna State Governor Yero imposed a 24-hour curfew following the attacks by the sect. He condemned the attacks saying that “those behind the act have no notion of God, as they have none for the sanctity of human life”.

It would be recalled on July 23, a former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), and an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, narrowly escaped death in an assasination attempt in Kaduna state.

In July 2014, it was reported the sect killed at least 82 people in a twin attack which rocked the state.

It would be recalled on June 25, it was reported that over 100 hundred people were feared dead in Kaduna massacre by the terrorists.
