As noted by UEFA, the nominees are judged on three criteria: Individual performances, decisive and impressive character, team performances and achievements, class and fair play.

The voting is done by one journalist from each of the top 100 countries on the FIFA rankings before the nominees' list is released, this time in June 2025.

Each journalist selects ten out of the 30 nominees in descending order of merit. The ten selected nominees are awarded 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point, respectively, and the player with the most points wins.

If there is a tie, the players are separated by the number of first-place votes, the second-place votes, until they are separated and a winner emerges.
