In January, his proposed move to the lucrative Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in January collapsed after the club opted to sign Jhon Duran instead.
Another proposed move in the summer collapsed after AC Milan decided not to sign him due to an issue detected with his history of ACL injuries during the medical examination.
He appeared destined to stay at Leverkusen before Bremen swooped on the deadline day to sign him on loan, covering a part of his €6 million salary.
He made his debut against Borussia Monchengladbach and provided an assist during the 4-0 victory despite playing 19 minutes off the bench.

However, in his second match, his coach singled him out for criticism for a problem that was with the whole team during their 3-0 loss to SC Freiburg, as noted by Soccernet.
Bremen had a difficult game at the Westerstadion. Their visitors went into halftime ahead by a goal through Vincenzo Grifo’s penalty.
Junior Adamu doubled the lead in the second half, before Karim Coulibaly’s own goal. Romano Schmid missed a penalty in the second half for the hosts.

Bremen head coach Horst Steffen was unimpressed with his team's disorganisation during their loss to Freiburg, and particularly new forward Boniface.
The Super Eagles forward featured for only 30 minutes, having come on in the 60th minute and picked up a yellow card in the 90th minute.

“For me, he was too ‘all over the place’, it’s okay for him to remain stationary in the centre. It wasn’t how I wanted it to be,” Steffen said as quoted by Get Football Germany.
“It wasn’t just him, but a lot of the guys who weren’t staying in their positions. We have to stick to our positions so we can overload them again and again. That’s something I’ll be addressing.”
Bremen sit 14th on the German Bundesliga table with four points from the opening four matches, one point above Augsburg in the relegation zone.
A Nigerian football writer who pleaded anonymity urged Boniface to show some seriousness at this difficult time in his career, lest he be forgotten.
“'I play for Bayer Leverkusen, AC Milan is interested in me', now he has ended up at Werder Bremen and still gets lashed for poor performances, he really has to watch it,” he told Legit.ng.
“His career is gradually slipping away, but those supporting him think everyone saying the truth about him hates him, when they only want good for him.”
Boniface names who convinced him to join Bremen
Legit.ng reported that Victor Boniface confirmed that Senne Lynen was crucial in his decision to join Werder Bremen on loan after his failed AC Milan move.
The two players were teammates at Royal Union Saint-Gilloise and left for Germany in 2023 to different clubs, and were reunited after the Nigerian’s move.
