Another Body Recovered from Lagos Lagoon After Car Crash On Third Mainland Bridge

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has confirmed the recovery of a second victim from last weekend’s accident on the Third Mainland Bridge.
A Toyota Camry plunged into the Lagos Lagoon in the early hours of Saturday, August 23, killing both occupants of the vehicle.

The first victim, a woman identified as Aisha, was recovered shortly after the crash by local divers and handed over to her family.

On Wednesday, LASWA said the body of the second occupant, 31-year-old Chado Daniel Danladi, had also been retrieved and released to his relatives. Danladi was said to be a colleague of the female victim.
In a statement, the authority explained that its search and rescue team responded immediately after receiving a distress call about the incident.
“On the early hours of Saturday, August 23rd, 2025, a tragic but resolutely managed incident occurred involving a Toyota Camry saloon car that plunged into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Iyana Iworo,” LASWA said.
“The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) Search and Rescue (SAR) team responded immediately upon receipt of the distress call. The team confirmed that the vehicle carried a female occupant identified as Aisha, aged approximately 25–35 years. Her body was swiftly recovered by local divers and promptly handed over to her family.”
Resources scrambled to mitigate casualties
The authority said emergency units from LASWA, the Marine Police, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) coordinated efforts at the scene.

Local fishermen were also credited for their role in the recovery operation.
LASWA noted that initial reports suggested there was only one person in the car, but further investigation showed that another passenger had been on board.
“While initial reports suggested a lone occupant, follow-up investigations confirmed the presence of a second passenger, identified as Chado Daniel Danladi, aged 31, residing at 7 Oremeta Street, Off Opebi Link Bridge, Ikeja. He was recognized as a colleague of the first victim. The body of the second victim was recovered during an extended SAR operation and has been delivered to his family,” the statement read.
The agency described the operation as a demonstration of how coordinated emergency response and community support improve Lagos state’s ability to manage waterway disasters.
“This incident underscores the effectiveness of our coordinated emergency response and the strong community support that enhance Lagos State’s capability in managing waterway emergencies. We remain committed to ensuring safety and rapid response in all such incidents,” LASWA added
FG to renovate Third Mainland Bridge
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the federal government had announced its plan to rehabilitate the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos state.
The minister of works, David Umahi, said the Third Mainland Bridge rehabilitation would cost President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration over N3 trillion.
Umahi explained the areas of the Third Mainland Bridge (Nigeria’s longest bridge) that needed massive repair.
