Senator Shehu Sani Finally Defects to PDP ahead of 2023

  • The PDP may have received a fresh boost as Senator Shehu Sani joined the opposition party ahead of 2023
  • Senator Sani allegedly confirmed his defection on Thursday, September 16, during a meeting with some PDP stakeholders in Kaduna
  • Sani who represented Kaduna Central in the eighth Senate on the APC left for the PRP following his failure to get the ruling party's senatorial ticket in 2019

Kaduna, Kaduna state - Senator Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker from Kaduna Central, has defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Daily Trust reported that Sani's defection was confirmed by his close aide, Malam Suleiman Ahmed.

Ahmed was quoted to have said:

“Yes, Distinguished Senator Shehu Sani has finally settled to join the PDP but official ceremony and reception will be in the next two weeks all things being equal.”

He said Sani confirmed his defection on Thursday, September 16, when he had a meeting with some PDP leaders in Kaduna, Leadership also reported.

Legit.ng notes that Senator Sani represented Kaduna Central Senatorial district in the 8th Assembly from 2015-2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He was, however, unable to return to the ninth Senate due to an unresolved issue he had with Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The outspoken political activist eventually defected to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) under which he contested but lost.

Nigerians react

Reacting to Sani's defection on Facebook, Stephen Junior said:

"That's the culture in Nigeria political system defecting anyhow as they like, very porous political institution in Nigeria."

Chekwube Chukwu Philips said:

"All these politicians with their drama! They are all after their pockets."

Shehu Sani dumped PRP

In July, Senator Sani dumped PRP. He wrote a letter to that effect, addressing it to the chairman of the party in ward six, Tudun Wada area of Kaduna state.

Legit.ng gathered that the former lawmaker's letter was titled, ‘Formal notification of my decision to step aside from the party’ and dated July 9, 2021.

Meanwhile, after months of speculations and denial, a former minister of aviation during the administration of the ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, Femi Fani-Kayode, has formally joined the ruling APC.

He was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari by the chairman, Caretaker Committee of the APC and governor of Yobe state, Mai Mala Buni on Thursday, September 16, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Fani Kayode said that he was led by the spirit of God in his decision and that he joined the APC to help for the unity of the country, adding that he was against anything that would cause the disintegration of Nigeria.
