APC Verus PDP: Winner Emerges as Tribunal Gives Verdict on Senatorial By-Election Petition in Plateau

Jos, Plateau state - The elections petition tribunal sitting in Jos on Monday, June 21, affirmed the election of Senator Nora Ladi Daduut, the lawmaker representing the Plateau South senatorial constituency on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

Delivering judgment, the three-man tribunal headed by Justice DA Akhobe dismissed the petition filed by George Daika of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for lack of merit, The Nation reported.

Daika had challenged Senator Daduut's victory in the Plateau South senatorial by-election held on Saturday, December 5, 2020.

Senator Daduut reacts to legal victory

Reacting to the tribunal's ruling via a Facebook post sighted by Legit.ng, the APC senator thanked the people of Plateau South, saying the victory is for them.

Her words:

"I give thanks to the Almighty God, the victory is for the people of Plateau South who trooped out en-mass last year to elect me as their representative at the upper chamber. I want to assure them that today’s ruling will further spur me to work relentlessly on their behalf to help address challenges facing our constituency.
“The ruling is also another testament that judiciary upholds fairness and justice. I want to say that with the judgment of today, we are once again reassured of the impartiality of the judiciary as they continue to uphold the ethos of equity and rule of law. I have the conviction that the ruling will further strengthen democracy not only in Plateau state but Nigeria as a whole."

She also sent a message to her PDP rival in the election, saying "there’s no victor and there’s no vanquished."

Senator Daduut urged Daika to join hands with her to advance the development of Plateau South.

She further thanked the Plateau state governor, Simon Lalong, and her party.

Tribunal affirms Stephen Odey's victory

Meanwhile, the election petitions tribunal sitting in Calabar, the Cross River state capital, has upheld the victory of the PDP candidate, Stephen Odey, in the Cross River North senatorial district by-election.

The tribunal delivered its ruling on Friday, June 18.

The panel led by Justice Yusuf Muhammad upheld the preliminary objection raised by Odey’s lawyer that the two grounds of the petition were pre-election matters.
