Don’t Allow Yourselves to be Killed, Nigerian Governor Tells Security Operatives

Imo state - Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo has advised security operatives to stop allowing themselves to be killed in cold blood by bandits attacking police facilities in the state.

The Punch reports that Uzodimma made the remark on Tuesday, June 15, during a condolence visit to the state police command headquarters in Owerri.

According to the governor, cops are the only ones licenced to carry guns in Nigeria. He urged the personnel to defend themselves as well as the lives and property of the people.

Speaking further, the former lawmaker revealed that his administration would introduce an insurance policy for all operatives serving in the state, Daily Times reports.

While sympathising with the police leadership over the killing of officers and burning of stations, Uzodimma added that the state government is working on a programme where all family members of those who died during the unrest would be compensated.

He assured the people of Imo that the state government would improve the security situation and increase the logistics required for the police.

The governor said that his administration would not abandon the families of the slain officers.

Gunmen attack Imo police headquarters

Hoodlums masquerading as unknown gunmen attempted an attack on the Police Headquarters in Owerri, the Imo state capital on Sunday morning, June 6, but suffered a huge defeat.

In a statement sent to Legit.ng, the hoodlums were reported to have made effort to access the Police Headquarters through Works Layout around Avan Nursery and Primary School.

Uzodimma urges Imo youths to give peace a chance

Meanwhile, Uzodimma has enjoined Imolites to always embrace peace, stressing that it is a panacea for development in the state.

The governor made the comment on Saturday, June 12, in his state-wide broadcast monitored by Legit.ng to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day.
