International Breweries Promotes STEM Education, Donates Science Laboratory to Community Grammar School

International Breweries Plc, brewers of Trophy, Hero, and Budweiser premium lagers have donated a fully-equipped science laboratory to Community Grammar School in Esa Odo, Osun state.

The event which held on the school grounds had top executives of International Breweries Plc, government officials including the Special Adviser to the Governor of Osun State on Education, Jamiu Olawunmi; Osun State Commissioner for Education, Folorunso Oladoyin; Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Special Needs, Olayemi Lawal; the Ejemu Oje of Esa Odo, Oba Julius Adeniran and the Principal, Community Grammar School, Esa Odo, Elder Woye Abiodun in attendance.

As part of its CSR efforts and commitment to its vision of ‘Bringing People Together for a Better World’, International Breweries Plc, who are a proud part of the AB InBev family; the world’s largest brewer with over 400 beer brands, made the donation to support the nurturing of youths towards embracing STEM; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in addition to the industrialisation agenda of the state and federal governments.

The N11.5 million naira laboratory refurbishment and equipment purchase by the brewing giants involved the donation of 41 measuring cylinders,30 retort stands,19 tripod stands, 20 test tube holders, 15 pulley systems, 15 G-clamps, 4 packs of Bunsen burners, 10 pieces each of thermometers, galvanometers, anemometers, and potentiometers, 75 pieces of lens and mirror, 20 pendulum bulbs, 15-meter rules, and one pack of optical bench among others.

International Breweries also embarked on the replacement of roofing sheets, roof timbers and ceiling boards, repair of cracked walls, wall plastering, floor tiling, and the replacement of old chairs, faulty doors, shelves, floor cabinets, tables, and laboratory stand with new ones. An overhead tank, a water pump, as well as school signage and directional signs, were also installed.

In his welcome address, the school principal, Elder Woye Abiodun appreciated International Breweries for the assistance rendered to the school and the Esa Odo community, in general. “For a long time, the school’s science laboratory was not in good shape and lacked the required equipment essential for learning, but today, we have a newly refurbished and fully-equipped laboratory. It’s why we cannot but commend the good work done by the company for the educational development of our students,” Abiodun said.

In his remarks, Plant Manager, International Breweries, Emmanuel Onabanjo noted that beyond creating an enabling environment for the school’s students to enhance their knowledge and practice of science, the laboratory donation is in line with the organisation’s commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

He cited SDG 4 which focuses on Quality Education and SDG 9 which speaks to Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure as the inspiration behind the decision to take on the science laboratory project, revealing that the laboratory will cater to the learning needs of about 400 students as well as the upcoming generation.

According to Onabanjo, “The developments and advancements we have witnessed in the field of science would not have been possible without the availability of state-of-the-art laboratories as research centres to prepare and train science students for the future. These trained students grow up to develop an interest in scientific research and form the next generation of tech innovators and scientists our nation needs. Hence, the need to provide a conducive learning environment where they can lay a good foundation, especially through the study of science.’’

The Ejemu Oje of Esa Odo, HRM Julius Adeniran who was also present at the event said, “We are grateful for this donation to Community Grammar School, Esa Odo because many of our children now have access to the equipment they need to update their knowledge of science; we are also hopeful that International Breweries will consider them for employment at some point in the near future.”

Speaking on behalf of the Osun State Government, Commissioner for Education, Folorunso Oladoyin commended the kind gesture of International Breweries, noting that the laboratory will contribute immensely to the development of science education and complement the efforts of the State Government towards bridging the gap of available science laboratories in secondary schools in the state.

On behalf the of Osun State Government, I will like to register my profound appreciation to your company for this corporate social responsibly project geared towards meaningful youth development that is capable of producing resourceful citizens that can transform the economy of this state, and Nigeria as a whole. The intervention of your company underscores the fact that the organisation is not only a profit-making one but also a platform for demonstration of responsible citizenship by taking care of the needs of critical members of the society,” Oladoyin said.

Osun State Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Special Needs, Olayemi Lawal urged other corporate bodies to partner with the State Government to drive its development efforts as International Breweries has done. “The events of today show that our government is ready and has provided an enabling environment for corporate organisations to partner with it to deliver a better state for our people,” he added.
