Ban: List of Top Pastors, Governor Who Are Still Using Twitter in Disobedience to FG

Despite the fact that the federal government through Lai Mohammed, minister of information and culture suspended the operations of the social media platform Twitter in Nigeria, some prominent citizens have continued to use the social media platform in disobedience to the Nigerian government.

In fact, Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), even ordered the immediate prosecution of Nigerians still using the social media platform.

This threat has however not stopped these prominent people, especially clerics and a governor from using the banned network.

Legit.ng in this report, citing the Punch Newspaper, lists the names of pastors and governor who have disobeyed the federal government.

Pastors

1. Pastor Enoch Adeboye - The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
2. Pastor William Kumuyi - General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry.
3. Pastor Sam Adeyemi - Senior Pastor of the Daystar Christian Centre, Lagos, Nigeria.
4. Apostle Johnson Suleiman - The General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries International.

Pastor Adeboye said his tweets were covered by Article 19 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights while Kumuyi claimed that his tweets were targeted at a global audience.

APC's clarion call

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Nigerians who are well-versed in the development of social media/software applications to come up with the nation's homegrown social media apps.

The ruling party made the call in a statement signed by its caretaker national secretary, Sen. John James Akpanudoedehe, and made available to Legit.ng on Saturday, June 5.

Legit.ng noted that the APC's statement follows the federal government's suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria. The ruling party noted that countries like Russia and China have their own homegrown social media platforms.

Also, Legit.ng had previously reported that the federal government, in a meeting convened by the minister of foreign affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, on Monday, June 7, gave the only condition on which it would end the ban on Twitter in Nigeria.

It was reported that Onyeama, who spoke with foreign diplomats in Abuja said for the President Buhari-led administration, the condition would be the responsible use of the app in the country.

The minister said the government is not saying that Twitter is threatening Nigeria, but that the site should not be used to destabilise the government or cause tension.
