Premium Times is reporting that the duo of Governor Nasir El-Rufai and his Ondo counterpart, Rotimi Akeredolu, have defied the federal government's ban on Twitter's operations in Nigeria.
According to the local online newspaper, both governors who are well known to be pillars of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were said to have sent messages via the app after the government's order.
The Kaduna governor on Sunday tweeted on an article authored by Nebojsa Malic, a Serbian-American journalist who justified the ban on the microblogging site.
Part of Malic's article contained in Governor El-Rufai's tweet read:
“Nigeria is a far more serious and ‘based’ country than the US, at least if President Muhammadu Buhari’s response to Twitter censorship – compared to that of Donald Trump’s – is anything to go by."
On his part, Akeredolu who happens to be the chairman of the southwest governors' forum, via the app, expressed regret and shock over the latest attack on the Igangan community in Oyo by some gunmen on Sunday.
The Ondo said:
“We, on our part, are resolved to defend our people, their property, and all legitimate means of livelihood against both internal and external aggression. On this, there will be no compromise."
FG gives reasons for the ban
Earlier, the government had explained the reasons why the operations of the microblogging site were put on hold.
The minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement on Friday, June 4, in Abuja suggested that Twitter was suspended in the interest of Nigeria. The government also accused the social media site of undermining Nigeria's corporate existence.
