Breaking: Police Council Confirms Alkali Baba As Substantive IGP

The police council has confirmed the appointment of Alkali Baba as the substantive Inspector General Of Police (IGP), Leadership reports.
Legit.ng reports that Baba was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in May in an acting capacity.
The Punch also reports that decision was taken at the council’s meeting presided over by President Buhari on Friday, June 4, in Abuja.
The newspaper noted that the minister of police affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, confirmed the development to State House correspondents at the end of the meeting.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that President Buhari presided over the police council meeting in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
It was reported that the top government officials in attendance included Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Kayode Fayemi, the chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Boss Mustapha.
The report also said that other attendees were the chief of staff to the president, Ibrahim Gambari; the minister of police affairs, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi, the minister of interior affairs, Rauf Aregbesola, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Muhammed Bello, chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), Musiliu Smith and Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Baba.

In a related report, IGP Baba put the commissioners of police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Plateau state on the alert over possible attacks by Boko Haram members.

The IGP's statement was contained in a circular dated Wednesday, May 19, 2021, and addressed to the two commissioners of police and signed by the principal staff officer to the IGP, Idowu Owohunwa.
The circular with reference number TB: 0900/IGP.SEC/ABJ/VOL.TI/47 was titled, ‘Terror elements to expand frontiers of attack.’
