Senate Passes Law Prohibiting Discrimination Against HND Holders

Abuja - The Senate has passed into law a bill abolishing discrimination against Higher National Diploma (HND) holders for the purposes of employment and promotion.
The new legislation titled: The Prohibition of Discrimination between First Degrees and Higher National Diplomas Bill, 2021, was passed on Wednesday, June 2, during a plenary in Abuja.
The Senate disclosed via Twitter that the bill was passed followed by the consideration and adoption of a report on the Bill presented by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, at plenary.
Ahmed Lawan commends Senators
The Senate president, Ahmed Lawan, who congratulated the lawmakers for passing the bill into law pointed out that the new legislation should be a motivation for polytechnic graduates.

He said:
“Congratulations to the Senate. This particular issue has been in the front burner for a long time. I recall that in the @HouseNGR between 2003 and 2007, this was one Bill that was so important and it is a way of encouraging our Polytechnic graduates."
In other news, the Senate has approved the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun state to a university of technology.
The development followed the third reading of a bill for an Act to provide for the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro and for other matters connected therewith.
The piece of legislation was sponsored by Senator Solomon Adeola, an All Progressives Congress (APC) senator representing Lagos West Senatorial District,
Meanwhile, barely five days after his appointment as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), President Muhammadu Buhari has forwarded the name of Major General Farouk Yahaya to the Senate for screening and confirmation, The Nation reported.
Legit.ng gathered that the president's request was contained in a letter he sent to the Senate and read on Tuesday, June 1, by the president of the upper chamber, Ahmad Lawan.
