President Muhammadu Buhari's firm position to deal with armed criminals, arsonists, and insurrectionists in Nigeria has triggered a lot of reactions.
One of those who responded to the president's threat was Festus Keyamo, the minister of state for labour and employment.
Via his Twitter page on Tuesday, June 1, Keyamo noted that reports are now viral online that the formerly unknown gunmen who went about killing Nigerians have been described as innocent citizens.
He added that some persons have gone ahead to interpret this as President Buhari's plot to attack and deal with innocent persons.
The minister referred to the twist as trickery and cunningness at their peak and full-blown conspiracy at work.
He declared:
"We were told they are UNKNOWN GUNMEN. But the moment the President vowed to deal with these ‘unknown’ elements, they have suddenly become known as INNOCENT CITIZENS in a part of the country! It is a case of ‘Cunning man die, Wayo man bury am’! A huge conspiracy blown wide open!
"The President has vowed to deal with the scoundrels destroying public infrastructure & killing people to instigate insurrection & some dimwits really interpret this to mean he is threatening INNOCENT citizens! This reasoning is so ABSURD that I don’t know whether to laugh or cry."
Speaking further, Keyamo mentioned that the mere fact that some persons are now worried and even angry over President Buhari's latest warning to armed gangs indicates that they are actually in support of criminals.
Identity of unknown gunmen in the southeast revealed
Earlier, Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi said he believes those responsible for the rising security challenges in the southeast were Igbo youths. The governor made the comment when he was interviewed virtually by journalists on Tuesday, June 1.

The governor lamented that indigenes of the region, especially the young people who should protect the interest of the southeast as future leaders were the ones carrying out the attacks.
His words:
“Let our people come out to speak out that the unknown gunmen are not really unknown gunmen, they are our young men and women who will defend our land tomorrow; they should stop giving themselves to be killed.”
