Democracy Day: Nigerian Students Association Says Nothing to Celebrate on June 12, Reveals Its Plans
- Instead of celebrating the June 12 democracy day, the Nigerian students' association, NANS, has unveiled what it will be doing that day
- NANS' president, Sunday Asefon said the national protest will be staged on June 12 to pressurise the government to address the security challenges particularly in schools
- Asefon added that payers will be held on Friday, June 11, for the safe release of students who are in the kidnappers' den

Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state - The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has declared Saturday, June 12, 2021, as the national day of peaceful protest.
Sunday Asefon, the association's president, made this known in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state, on Tuesday, June 1, explaining that the protest is to call on the government to act decisively towards addressing insecurity in schools and campuses, The Punch reported.
Legit.ng gathers that the association also declared Friday, June 11, as the national students’ day of prayers.
Asefon said prayers will be offered for the repose of our students who have died in the hands of kidnappers and for the safe return of those who are still with their kidnappers.
He bemoaned the kidnap of over 200 students of Islamiyya School in Rafi Council area of Niger State, adding that NANS has relocated its national headquarters to the north-central state pending the release of the students.
His words:
“I hereby declare 11th June as the national students’ day of prayers. Prayers shall be offered for the repose of our students who have died in the hands of kidnappers. Prayers shall be held for the safe return of our students who are still with their kidnappers.
“I hereby declare June 12, 2021, as the National Day of Peaceful Protest to call on the government to act decisively towards addressing insecurity in our schools, campuses and also announce a proactive measure or strategy towards ensuring safer schools.”
Though June 12 is the official date set aside for the celebration of democracy in Nigeria, Asefon said there is no reason for celebrating when citizens are not at peace because of the growing national insecurity.
Nigerian Tribune also reported that Asefon said the student’s body will soon convoke a national security summit where stakeholders will discuss and proffer workable and innovative ideas towards ensuring maximum security around schools in the country.

Meanwhile, presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said President Muhammadu Buhari will not sit and watch while kidnappers continue to cause mayhem in different parts of the country.
Shehu said the Nigerian leader has ordered security and intelligence agencies to expedite efforts towards the recovery of the 200 children kidnapped from an Islamic school in Niger state.
He said President Buhari who has received a briefing on the latest incident of school kidnapping described it as unfortunate.
