Report Alleges That Zamfara Governor Plans to Defect From PDP to APC on June 12

- The PDP may lose a key member to the APC if the recent rumour about an impending defection in Zamfara state is credible

- The Zamfara state governor, Bello Matawalle, has not openly declared his intentions to resign from the PDP but reports have repeatedly linked him to the ruling party

- If Matawalle eventually defects to the APC, his defection would be considered another huge blow to the PDP who just lost Governor Ben Ayade in similar circumstances

According to the publication, the source asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the development.

The informant also disclosed that Matawalle dissolved the council because the deputy governor, Mahdi Aliyu, and some members are reluctant to move with him to the ruling party.

He said:

“I dissolved the cabinet because after two years, it is time to reinvigorate my government for the second half of my tenure.”

Meanwhile, Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River, on Thursday, May 27 said he joined the ruling APC for the benefit of the state.

Ayade said this while addressing APC youth groups who held a rally to welcome him to the party at the governor’s office in Calabar, the state capital.

However, Donald Duke, a former governor of Cross River state, has lamented the defection of Governor Ben Ayade to the ruling party.

In a statement publicly announcing his return to the PDP on Wednesday, May 26, Duke said it is unfortunate that Governor Ayade convinced him to return to the PDP only for him to defect to the APC soon after.

Nevertheless, the new PDP chieftain said he would neither support nor condemn Ayade's defection because he was not privy to the details of what motivated his action.
