Don’t Scrap NYSC, Repercussion May Be Dangerous, Sultan Warns

Sokoto, Sokoto - Following the criticisms on the proposed scrapping of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by the members of the House of Representatives, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has expressed great concern.
Premium Times reports that the Sultan said the agitation for the scrapping of the NYSC scheme is not in the interest of Nigeria’s unity.
Legit.ng gathered that Abubakar spoke when he hosted some selected members of NYSC Batch A stream 2 corps members posted to Sokoto state in his palace on Monday, May 31.
Agitation about NYSC ill-conceived
The Sultan said those agitating for the scrapping of the scheme did not mean well for the country.
Daily Trust also reports that the emir explained that the NYSC scheme was established to foster the nation’s unity and strengthen ties among Nigerians.
He said:
“I heard there are efforts for the scrapping of the NYSC scheme, I assure you that those behind that struggle do not mean well for this country."
NYSC scheme is needed to foster unity among ethnic groups
The cleric noted that the NYSC scheme is the most needed programme in view of the present situation when Nigeria is almost divided along ethnic and religious lines.
Abubakar urged the youth corps members to consider the state as their second home and explore the opportunities therein.
He also advised them to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities, urged them to be security conscious as there are security challenges in parts of the state.
Bill seeking to scrap NYSC may scale through
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the House of Representatives is considering a bill to scrap the National Youth Service Corps scheme.
It was reported that the bill titled the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Alteration Bill, 2020, was sponsored by Awaji-Inombek Abiante.
The proposed legislation which is seeking to repeal the NYSC Act is billed for the second reading in the House.
Abiante explained that banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of insecurity justified the intent of the bill.

In another report, a civil society organisation, Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency, CESJET, condemned the sponsoring of a bill to scrap the NYSC by a member of the House of Representatives.
The group said the bill proposing the discontinuation of NYSC is an evil plot against the Nigerian youths.
The group said the thought of scrapping NYSC, is championed by the agents of destabilisation of Nigeria.
