Several Feared Killed As Herdsmen Reportedly Attack Ebonyi Communities

- Residents of three communities in Ebonyi state have alleged that armed herdsmen attacked homes in their local government

- The police have not made any officials statement about the attack which reportedly occurred in Odoke, Ndiobasi, and Obakotara areas

Three Ebonyi communities that share a boundary with Benue state have reportedly been attacked by gunmen suspected to be herders.

The Nation reported that the attack occurred around 3am on Sunday morning, May 30.

While the official number of those killed in the attack has not been ascertained, sources claimed that about 30 people lost their lives in the incident.

Residents said the affected communities are Odoke, Ndiobasi, and Obakotara in the Ebonyi local government areas.

A community member, Uchenna Okpokwu, stated that the casualties may even be higher than 30 since the damage to affected communities has not been fully ascertained.

He said:

“Currently, people that were slaughtered in Ndiobasi are up to 30 according to the video clips on the incident but Odoke and Obapta are very far and nobody was able to entered those two villages to capture those that were killed.''

The Punch reported that the incident was confirmed by a House of Representatives member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo federal constituency, Francis Agbo.

He said:

''Izzi settlements of tologa, Ndi-Obasi, Odoken in Ekile Ward, Ado LGA, are badly affected. Now the Izzi people in Obakoto, Odirewu, Offianka, Nwedoga in Ijigban have deserted the areas for fear of invasion.”

Meanwhile, the commissioner of police in Kano, Sama’ila Dikko, has said that herdsmen entering the state must get clearance from the police command in their current domain showing they are leaving for Kano.

Addressing journalists shortly after an emergency security meeting with heads of security agencies at his office on Wednesday, May 26, Dikko said any herdsman that enters Kano without the clearance would be turned back.

He said the decision was part of the security arrangements that have been made by his command in a bid to maintain peace and security in the state.
