Constitution Review an Exercise in Futility, Waste of Public Funds, Afenifere Declares
- Afenifere has said that the ongoing constitution review by the members of the National Assembly is an exercise in futility

Following the ongoing public hearing by the National Assembly on the review of the 1999 constitution, a pan Yoruba socio-political association, Afenifere, has stated that the exercise would not solve the myriad of challenges confronting Nigeria.
PM News reports that the group, which stated this on Thursday, May 27, emphasised that the constitution review was an exercise in futility.

Legit.ng gathered the general secretary of the group, Sola Ebiseni, said that Afenifere decided not to submit a memorandum at the public hearing because the session of the two arms of the National Assembly, since 2007, did not yield results.
The exercise didn't yield results in the past
Vanguard also reports that the group said the National Assembly embarked on the same jamboree of constitutional amendment and spent public funds on public hearings without any result in the past.
Ebiseni added that Afenifere believed in the restructuring of the country and true federalism as he emphasised that the National Assembly must also be discussed in the process of restructuring.
He also maintained that the exercise called for questioning following the condemnation of the declarations of the southern governors in support of restructuring by both the Senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives.
The group noted:
“The National Assembly is part of the issue to be determined in the process of restructuring and cannot legitimately be the judge in such exercise."

Constitution review is good for Nigeria
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the lawmaker representing Kaduna Central at the Senate, Malam Uba Sani, said that the ongoing public hearing on the review of the 1999 constitution is a good opportunity to make input in remaking Nigeria into a country.
It was reported that Sani said it was fireworks on all the contentious issues, even though the atmosphere was friendly and business-like.
The senator urged the participants to continue to exhibit the same level of enthusiasm throughout the exercise, noting that Governor Nasir El-Rufai set the tone for frank, no-holds-barred discussions on day one of the public hearing.
