Yakubu Ibrahim, the chairman of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa, was on Monday, May 24, attacked and manhandled by some aggrieved members of the party.
This came after a statement from the office of Governor Muhammad Badaru declared one Bala Chamo as one of the candidates for the coming local government polls, Premium Times reports.
This announcement infuriated some party members who felt that Chamo's candidacy was against the constitution of the APC in the state.
The angry members went ahead to invade the party secretariat during a meeting and attacked Ibrahim, a 70-year-old man.
Confirming the development, the police commissioner in the state, Usman Gomna, said while those responsible for the crime have been arrested, the victim is currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
Meanwhile, the People Democratic Party (PDP), the Jigawa state chapter of the party had expelled its governorship candidate in the 2015 and 2019 elections, Aminu Ibrahim, over alleged anti-party activities.
This followed a dispute between Ibrahim and former governor Sule Lamido, whom he served as chief of staff when Lamido was governor. This was disclosed by the PDP chairman in the state, Ibrahim Babandi.

He said:
“The decision was reached after investigation indicted the official of sabotaging the party from local government to state levels."
Meanwhile, Ibrahim said his expulsion is null and void because the state executive committee of the PDP is illegitimate and has no power to summon him before any committee.
Earlier, Governor Badaru had raised security concerns over the suspected infiltration of Boko Haram insurgents into the state from neighboring Bauchi.
The secretary to the Bauchi state government, Sabiu Baba, at a press conference on Monday, May 3, said the insurgents were suspected to have infiltrated four council areas in the state.
