A former governor of Cross River, Liyel Imoke, has denied claims that he sold the state to his successor, Ben Ayade, for the sum of N2 billion during the 2015 elections.
Regretting the allegation, Imoke disclosed to newsmen in Calabar that his intention for supporting the current administration was to uphold the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)'s tradition which is usually handed from one generation to the next, The Guardian reports.

He said the claim is propelled by persons from Ayade's government, explaining that he did such people a favour by working hard to see them get to the top.
Going forward, he disclosed that he is back to redeem the party's image from those who failed to keep this long-standing tradition.
Imoke's words:
“I have watched this government even accuse me of collecting money to support the governor. Can you imagine? Yet, some people believe that I sold the state to somebody, while I did them a favour and worked hard to put them in power."
The former governor said the resolve at the moment is to make sure power is handed over to the youths in the next election.
Calling on the electorate in the state, the former governor declared:
“In 2023, let us give leadership to the youths, who understand the importance of generational change because the time has come for generational change.”
Meanwhile, Professor Ivara Ejemot Esu, the deputy governor of Cross River state, had officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The deputy governor's official defection comes days after his principal, Ben Ayade, joined the ruling party.
