Breaking: Casualties Reported As Security Forces Battle Unknown Gunmen in Imo

Security forces engaged some unknown gunmen in a fierce gun battle on Tuesday, May, 25, in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
The Nation reported that the security team comprised of soldiers, policemen, and the Air Force personnel.
The publication stated that the hoodlums suffered casualties from the gun battle.
Sources told the newspaper that the gunbattle began shortly after the gunmen, numbering over 20, attempted to attack and burn the Orji Divisional Police Headquarters situated on Owerri-Okigwe Road in Owerri which is still under reconstruction.

But the security forces reportedly foiled the attack.
The police spokesman, in Imo, Bala Elkanah, said the police were able to repel the hoodlums before they could destroy the police station.
The attack by the hoodlums was also confirmed in a report by Vanguard newspaper.
The Owerri attack comes after a similar attack on a police facility in Enugu states within Nigeria’s southeast region.
Five persons including policemen were reportedly killed during the raid on the police station. Vehicles and other property in the premises of the police division were burnt down.
Meanwhile, Loveday Obilonu, a police sergeant has been shot dead in Owerri, the Imo state capital, by gunmen who are yet to be identified.
Leadership newspaper reported that the policeman was discovered dead in a gutter at Okwuuratta Road, off Chukwuma Nwoha Road, Owerri North, on Wednesday, May 19.
Legit.ng gathers that Obilonu, a father of four, was attached to the Department of Operations at the state police command headquarters in Owerri.
In another news, the spate of recent attacks on properties and structures of the INEC has forced the chairman of the agency, Mahmood Yakubu, to open up on its consequences.
In his address to top INEC staff and journalists on Wednesday, May 19, Yakubu stated that apart from the fact that replacing the damaged equipment will be extremely difficult, the trend is having a serious toll on the commission's commitment to strengthen the nation's electoral process, Tribune reported.
Yakubu claimed that the perpetrators are systematic in their evil operations.
