Manipulative Tweet Label Causes Indian Crackdown on Twitter Offices

- Indian government sent Police officers to Twitter office for labelling its ruling party's spokesperson manipulative

A dramatic event occured in India on Monday, after Delhi Police stormed two Twitter offices in the country following the social media firm's decision to label a tweet from Sambit Patra, the spokesperson for the ruling partly BJP, as “manipulated media.”

Patra had tweeted that a toolkit has been deployed by opposition leading party to divert effort by Indian government against the coronavirus pandemic. Twitter flagged the tweet and the decision didn't go down well with the sitting government.

Jack Dorsey's tech firm had made the decision as leading fact-checking organization in India, Alt News, debunked Patra’s claim. Police in charge of terrorism and other crimes went to raid Twitter's offices following the flagging, but met no one to attend to them.

They said complaint about Patra’s manipulated tweet prompted their visit to Twitter, a statement to local TV channels and other media showed.

“Delhi Police is enquiring into a complaint in which clarification is sought from Twitter regarding the classification of a tweet by Shri Sambit Patra (BJP spokesman) as ‘manipulative.
"It appears that Twitter has some information which is not known to us on the basis of which they have classified it as such."

The police added that:

“This information is relevant to the enquiry. Special Cell which is conducting the enquiry wants to find out the truth. Twitter which has claimed to know the underlying truth should clarify."

The raid on Twitter's offices has drawn criticism from various persons.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Suez Canal Authority will hold on to the large ship which blocked Egypt's sea path, and result to about $90 million in six days in the month of March.

The country had seized the ship known as Ever Given after relocating it from the position it broke down. The ship was stuck in the sea, rendering about 400 ship stranded two months ago.

A court in Egypt gave Suez Canal Authority the right to continue holding the ship despite the owners Shoei Kisen stating that it loses between $6 billion to $10 billion everyday the ship doesn't work.
