Tragedy, Tension in Benue as Herders kill Over 100 Farmers in 4 Communities

- No fewer than 100 farmers have been killed by suspected armed herdsmen in Benue state

- Alfred Atera, the chairman of Katsina-Ala local council confirmed the ugly development and fatality figure

Gunmen suspected to be armed herdsmen reportedly killed over 100 persons in Katsina-Ala local council of Benue state.

The Guardian reports that the killings started on Friday night, May 21, up until Monday morning, May 24.

Katsina-Ala local council chairman, Alfred Atera, confirmed the fatality figure from the unfortunate incident.

The local council chairman lamented that his people were scampering for safety as the armed herdsmen shot sporadically and littered dead bodies.

According to Atera, the areas affected by the attack include, Yooyo, Utange, Mbatura/Mberev, and Mbayongo, ThisDay reports.

It was gathered that the herders reportedly set ablaze residential houses and destroyed farms.

Meanwhile, armed herdsmen reportedly killed a man and his wife at Udei branch in Mbabai ward, Guma local government area of Benue state.

Legit.ng reported that the man identified as Igba Faga and his wife were on Tuesday evening, April 27, macheted to death while returning from their farm on a motorbike.

The special adviser on security to the Benue state governor, Col. Paul Hemba (rtd), told newsmen in Makurdi on Wednesday, April 28, that suspected armed herders had laid ambush on the couple and hacked them to death on their way home from the farm.

In a related development, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue on Sunday, May 23, said he will no longer announce the deaths of those killed by herdsmen in the state.

Ortom, who made the remark at the Chapel of Grace in Government House, Makurdi, to round up a prayer and fasting programme said the people of Benue should rise up and defend themselves with weapons not prohibited by law.

The governor speaking further at the interdenominational church service urged residents to get a licence for dane guns from local government chairmen and use them to defend themselves.
