Okowa, Obaseki, Ortom Mourn Passing of COAS, Other Officers

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state has commiserated with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian Army, and the Attahiru family on the tragic death of Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, describing the incident as deeply saddening.
In a statement sent to Legit.ng by his spokesman, Mr. Olisa Ifeajika, on Saturday, May 22, the governor also condoled with the deceased’s Doka community, the people of Kaduna North local government area, and Kaduna state government over the tragedy.

He said:
“Gen. Attahiru had an illustrious military career and served the nation with full dedication and died on active duty. His memories will be difficult to forget.”
On his part, Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom described the death of the COAS as shocking and quite painful.
The governor said the loss of Lt General Attahiru and the other military officers who were also on board the aircraft is a major setback to the fight against insecurity in the country.
He stated that the late Chief of Army Staff demonstrated commitment to tackling the wave of insecurity since his assumption of office earlier this year.
Governor Ortom sympathized with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Nigerian Army, and the bereaved families and prayed that God grants their families the strength to bear the losses.
Similarly, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state has mourned the passing of the COAS, and other officers in the ill-fated crash.
In a statement seen by Legit.ng, Obaseki expressed shock and sadness over the unfortunate incident, praying that God will grant the repose of their souls.
He said:
“We pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident and admonish the military to continue with the patriotic efforts to secure the country.”
Legit.ng had earlier reported that General Lucky Irabor, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has directed that an Accident Investigation Board be constituted to ascertain remote and immediate causes of the ill-fated crash.
This was revealed in a statement signed by the spokesman of the Defence Headquarters, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu.
Meanwhile, Attahiru, from Kaduna state, becomes the second Nigerian Chief of Army Staff to die in a plane crash while in office.
The first was Lt. Colonel Joseph Akahan who was Chief of Army Staff from May 1967 until May 1968, when he was killed in a helicopter crash during the Nigerian Civil War.
