Nigerian Army Announces Burial Arrangement for Late COAS Attahiru, Others

The burial proceedings for the late Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Ibrahim Attahiru, and six other senior staff has been announced by the Nigerian Army.
The deceased who lost their lives in a military plane crash in Kaduna on Friday, May 21, will be buried on Saturday, May 22, in Abuja.
Mohammed Yerima, the army spokesman, in a series of tweets disclosed that the event would commence by 10 a.m. at the National Mosque and National Christian Centre.
The interment will also hold on the same day at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja at 1 p.m.
The COAS was said to be on his way to Kaduna to attend the passing-out parade of army recruits scheduled for Saturday. Unfortunately, he and 10 other officers did not make it as their aircraft crashed.
President Buhari, other Nigerians react
The death of Attahiru came as a rude shock to Nigerians who have been reacting in different ways.
President Muhammdu Buhari described the death of the Army boss and other military officers as a mortal blow to Nigeria's underbelly. He also condoled with the families of the deceased.
A former Nigerian vice president, Atiku Abubakar, referred to Attahiru's death as constituting a dark day for the entire nation.
He commiserated with President Buhari and the bereaved families of the deceased military officers.
On his part, the outspoken former senator from Kaduna, Shehu Sani, described what happened as a national tragedy.
Cause of crash
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has opened up on the cause of the plane crash that resulted in the death of Attahiru and 10 other officers on Friday, May 21.
Onyema Nwachukwu, defence spokesman, noted that the crash occurred after the aircraft landed at the Kaduna International Airport. According to him, inclement weather was part of the causes of the tragedy.
General Lucky Irabor, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has ordered an investigation into the actual cause of the plane crash.
