US, UK Govts React to Death of Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, 10 Other Officers in Plane Crash

- The US Mission in Nigeria has condoled with the country over the death of the Chief of Army Staff, Ibrahim Attahiru, and 10 others

- Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, has also expressed shock and sadness over the tragic incident

The United States Mission in Nigeria has joined the country in mourning the death of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, describing it as a tremendous loss.

The US Mission's condolence is contained in a statement posted on its Twitter page of Friday night, May 21.

The statement seen by Legit.ng reads in part:

"During this difficult time across Nigeria when security and peace is so needed, we offer our deepest sympathy to the family of General Attahiru and to the families of all those who perished."

Similarly, Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, has reacted to the incident.

Laing in a Twitter post said:

"Profoundly shocked & saddened by this terrible news. Our deepest condolences to the family & friends of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, and all who so tragically lost their lives. I have sent condolence messages to @CDS_Nig Chief of Staff to @MBuhari"

Accordingding to Nigerian Army, Attahiru and 10 other officers, including the crew, lost their lives in the crash.

The Army explained that the COAS was enroute Kaduna from Abuja on Friday, 21 May, 2021 when the unfortunate incident happened.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said he deeply saddened over the air crash that claimed the lives of Attahiru and other military officers.

The president condoled with families of the deceased, the military, and Nigerians in general, describing them as “heroes who paid the ultimate price for peace and security in the land.”

While praying that God receives the souls of the patriots, President Buhari said the crash “is one mortal blow to our underbelly, at a time our armed forces are poised to end the security challenges facing the country.”
