PDP tells Members What to do After Ayade's Defection, Sends Message to Cross River Governor

- Nigeria's main opposition party, PDP has reacted to losing one of its key members to the APC

- The party's spokesman Kola Ologbondiyan appealed to stakeholders in Cross River to ensure PDP remains intact

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday, May 21, sent a crucial message to Cross River state governor, Ben Ayade following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Recall that the governor made the announcement during a meeting with some APC governors who paid him a visit at the government house.

Channels TV reports that the country's main opposition party wished Ayade well in his new political stay and future endeavours.

This was made known in a statement by PDP national publicity secretary Kola Ologbondiyan.

Ologbondiyan, according to Leadership asked members of the party in Cross River to remain steadfast, committed and united to PDP.

The PDP spokesman went on to appeal to its members to immediately pull themselves together and ensure every structure of the party remains intact.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP held a closed-door meeting in its headquarters, Abuja.

The meeting started shortly after Governor Ayade’s defection filtered in as party officials assembled at the office of the national chairman for the emergency meeting.

In a related development, Governor Ayade credited President Muhammadu Buhari for his decision to dump the opposition PDP for the APC.

The Cross River state governor said the president has a nationalistic view and hence, the reason why he joined the APC.

He said all governors should leave politics aside and do everything to commit themselves to the vision of the country.

As expected, the defection has attracted diverse reactions from Nigerians on social media.

Obinna Nwosu, @obi_Nwosu, said:

"Ben Ayade has decamped to the APC on rumours that he has joined the list of those promised 2023 presidency. As it stands now 3 from the south south, 3 from the south east and 3 from the southwest have allegedly been promised 2023 presidency. One seat, 9 promises. How will it end?"
