Why Southern Governors Lack the Power to Ban Open Grazing, AGF Malami

Abubakar Malami, the attorney-general of the federation, says the resolve of southern governors to ban open grazing is illegal.

Legit.ng recalls that the southern governors at a recent meeting in Asaba, Delta state, resolved to ban open grazing and the movement of cattle by foot.
Speaking on the development on Wednesday, May 19, in an interview on Channels Television, Malami faulted the decision of the southern governors.
He said the resolve of the governors does not align with the provisions of the constitution.

The AGF stated that banning open grazing in the south is equivalent to prohibiting spare parts trading in the north.
Malami said:
“It is about constitutionality within the context of the freedoms expressed in our constitution. Can you deny the rights of a Nigerian?”
“For example: it is as good as saying, perhaps, maybe, the northern governors coming together to say they prohibit spare parts trading in the north.
“Does it hold water? Does it hold water for a northern governor to come and state expressly that he now prohibits spare parts trading in the north?”
Meanwhile, the president of the Senate, Dr Ahmad Lawan, on Thursday, May 13 faulted the call for restructuring the country by the Southern Governors Forum.
Speaking to State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Lawan said it was wrong for elected officials to lead such agitation.
He stated that the worsening security situation in the country is a result of a lack of a functional local government system.
In another news, the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has reacted to the resolutions reached by the governors from Southern Nigeria at a meeting recently held in Asaba, Delta state.
the CNG said the southern governors unfairly profiled the entire business community of herders as the sole cause of the security challenges in the region.
