Following the rising cases of insecurity across Nigeria, the apex Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has reiterated calls for President Muhammadu Buhari to resign.
According to Ayo Adebanjo, leader of Afenifere, if it were to be a better and civilised country, Buhari should have honourably tendered his resignation long ago without being asked to, This Day reports.
He disclosed this on Tuesday, May 11, during the 95th birthday celebration of Reuben Fasoranti, former leader of the group.
The Afenifere leader accused Nigerians of being over-tolerant of dictators which is the reason President Buhari is still in office.
Adebanjo stated:
“What is he presiding over? Is it over corruption, security, education? Law and order have broken down in the country for the past three years. It is only because Nigerians are over tolerance of despots; that is why he is still there”.
Youths should be ashamed
In a report by Vanguard, the Afenifere chieftain also took a swipe at the Nigerian youths, who according to him, have failed the country.
Adebanjo said they should hide in shame for depending on the older folks to fight their cause for them. He added that when he was younger, the country was not as bad as it is today.
Nigerians react
The Afenifere leader's comment was trailed by reactions.
Gwarzo with the Twitter handle @Gwarzo18 commented:
"He is still in office because they voted for him not once but twice. He is still in office bcos we operate fake economy. 95% of Nigerians are not affected by who is the president. We allocate 80% of annual budget to 5% of our 200mil population who produce absolutely nothing."

"Who made him a despot? Those that voted him into office are the real despots. Yoruba's are part of d despots if not they wouldn't have voted for him both in the 2015 & 2019 general elections. Reason because of their evil thoughts that PMB might die in office, that vee pee takeover."
Nigerians told not to worry
Amid heightened insecurity and calls for Buhari to resign, the presidency has made a humorous effort to lighten the mood of Nigerians.
A presidential media aide, Lauretta Onochie, on Monday, May 10, advised fellow citizens that although the country is going through serious ordeals, the president has already started to fix the many problems through his nation-building initiatives.
She shared a photo-shopped video of the president singing a popular song by the late renowned Reggae star, Bob Marley.
