BREAKING: Unknown Gunmen Attack Another Police Station in Imo, Kill 5 Officers

- Another police facility has been ferociously attacked by unknown armed men in Imo state

- The attackers killed five policemen and set their station ablaze after freeing all those detained inside the facility

- The incident is one of the many coordinated attacks on police facilities in the southeast region of Nigeria

Channels Television is reporting that unknown gunmen have attacked another police station in Imo state.

According to the report, the incident happened in Okigwe South local government area of the state.

During the attack, five police officers were reportedly killed, while one has been declared missing.

The assailants also burnt down the police building after the attack.

A police officer who spoke to The Punch said that on arrival, the gunmen opened fire on the cops who challenged them.

The invaders were said to have freed all the suspects in the cells and carted away arms.

The source said that no fewer than five policemen were shot dead by the attackers as they torch the security facility.

His words:

“Our area command headquarters in Okigwe south is on fire. Six policemen shot dead. They also freed the suspects before igniting a fire on the facility.”

When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, said that five policemen were killed while one was missing during the attack.

He disclosed that the command had launched an investigation into the onslaught.

The Nation reports that the incident caused serious panic in the area with villagers running to hide inside bushes.

A source said:

“We started hearing gunshots around 7.00 pm and the gunshots became heavier around the Orieagu market.
“We thought it was the First Bank there that was being robbed until after the attack that we discovered that it was the area command.

“It was after about one hour later that some of us emerged from the bushes to check what happened and counted about six policemen lying in the pool of their own blood.”

The incident occurred a day after the Imo commissioner for entrepreneurship and skill acquisition, Iyke Ume was shot by unknown gunmen in the state capital, Owerri.

The armed men also shot four other motorists during the attack on Sunday night, April 25.

Recall that the residence of Governor Hope Uzodinma in Omuma, Oru East Local government area, was on Saturday, April 24, attacked by unknown gunmen who also succeeded in killing some security operatives attached to the governor's mansion.

The invaders had a gun battle with the operatives, set fire on the edifice, and destroyed vehicles parked inside the compound.
