Jose was born in South Africa in Thembisa (formerly Tembisa), a large township situated to the north of Kempton Park on the East Rand, Gauteng. She was raised in the Netherlands.

In 1995, Stemkens started working for Espirit, an international fashion brand. She worked for the brand for 10 years before leaving to go work for The Great China Wall, a high-end clothing line, as its international account manager.
In 2009, she left The Great China Wall and joined Dept & JC RAGS as president. During her four years with both brands, Titus Welliver spouse's talents saw the brands grow exponentially.
She left Dept & JC RAGS in 2013 and took her talents to the House of Quirky, where she served as vice president for 8 months.
She opened her own fashion consulting firm known as Sunrise Fashion Consulting in 2014. Her firm offers consulting services to international brands who are looking to start and find their ways into the United States fashion market by connecting them to trusted department stores and boutiques all over the US. In 2017, Stemkens and Jane Munro-Altinok founded a fashion brand, Eywasouls Malibu. According to its website, the brand is inspired by the blue ocean waves, the golden sands of the beaches and the Malibu lifestyle.
Wedding to actor Titus Welliver
Stemkens and Welliver tied the knot in April 2014 at Saddle Peak Lodge in Calabasas, California. The bride wore a beautiful gown by Herve Leger.
The renowned Tiana Scharf at The Exotic Green Garden helped plan the wedding and did the flowers, and the guests were entertained by the band Trash Honey.
