Controversy as PDP Governor Gets Invitation to Join APC

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara, Aminu Sani-Jaji, has said Governor Bello Matawalle is welcome to join the party.

The Guardian reported that Sani-Jaji made the statement at a press briefing in Gusau on Monday, April 19.

He stated that the Zamfara governor has the constitutional right to join any political party of his choice.

The politician said:

“For me asking Matawalle not to defect to APC is a clear violation of his constitutional right as provided for by Section 40 of the Nigerian 1999 Constitution, as amended.

“If the constitution allows for freedom of political association who then would stop Matawalle or any other person from defecting to APC? I think those breeding this type of thinking are not good democrats.’’

The APC chieftain criticised members of his party who are threatening to file a legal action against the governor if he defects from the People Democratic Party (PDP).

He distanced himself from any opposition to the reported plan by Matawalle to join the APC.

Meanwhile, a report has emerged that Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state risks losing his governorship seat if he defects from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A former governor of Zamfara, Abdul'aziz Yari, made the statement on Sunday, April 11, at the APC secretariat in Gusau, the state capital, The Punch reported.

Yari who was represented by Senator Kabiru Marafa explained that based on a judgment of the Supreme Court, any Zamfara PDP elected official who defects will lose the position he holds.

Similarly, Suleiman Shuaibu Shinkafi, the national coordinator of the Concerned APC Youth of Nigeria, has spoken on the alleged planned defection of Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara state to the APC

Daily Trust reported that Shinkafi said the Zamfara state governor cannot leave the PDP for the APC.

According to him, the governor must resign his position if he wants to join APC. He added that Governor Matawalle was not elected by the Zamfara people.
