As Fulani herdsmen continue to destroy farmlands across the southwest region, some of the herders are now under arrest alongside some of their cows.
The arrests were made by the Ondo state Security Network Agency, Amotekun, Punch reports.
The security outfit seized about 250 cows and arrested two herders.
They were accused of destroying 300-hectare farmland in Ipogun, Ilara Mokin and Owena Dan areas of Ifedore local government area of the state.
Some of the destroyed crops include cassava, cocoyam, plantain and maize.
The arrest was announced by the state commander of Amotekun, Chief Adetunji Adeleye, Tribune added.
He said:
“I was amazed when I saw the level of destruction when we got to the farm. The herders first attacked us, but later ran away. However, we arrested two of them. We also seized over 250 cows.”
Going further, he said the herders will be charged to court while their animals are auctioned.
This comes as Abia state governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, explained why he and his colleagues in the southeast region of the country took the decision to launch their own joint security outfit codenamed 'Ebube Agu.'
Ikpeazu said the new agency would oversee and monitor the activities of vigilante groups within the geopolitical zone.
According to him, the governors came together to synergise and see how best they can protect the lives and properties of citizens.
In another report, a socio-cultural group in Osun state, Kiriji Heritage Defenders, raised an alarm that there is an influx of violent Fulani herdsmen into some parts of the state.
The group made this known in a statement released by its spokesman, Ekundayo Ademola, in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, on Thursday, April 8.
Legit.ng gathered that Ademola said the herdsmen were entering the state through Kwara state.
It was also reported that Amotekun operatives arrested about 100 cows and nine herders along Akure/Ilesa highway.
The herders were arrested for flouting directives by the state concerning grazing rules.
According to the commander of Amotekun in Ondo state, Adetunji Adeleye, the cows were intercepted and arrested at the boundary of Osun and Ondo states.
Also, the Ondo state governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to openly condemn acts of violence by criminal herdsmen.
Akeredolu made the statement on Monday, February 15, during an interview on Channels TV.
The governor asked security agencies to do their best in preventing criminality by erring herdsmen.
