Pantami: Minister's Lawyer Reacts to Newspaper's Publication Against His Client

- Isa Pantami's lawyer has reacted to the Daily Independent report on the minister's ties with terrorists

A lawyer to the minister of communication and digital economy, Isa Pantami, has insisted that his client would be taking legal steps against Daily Independent over its report on the minister being on the US watch list.

Michael Jonathan also described the recent retraction and apology by the newspaper on the said story as inadequate.

In a statement seen by Legit.ng, Jonathan said the report by the newspaper contained grave defamatory statements detriment to the hard-earned reputation of his client (the minister).

He also said that the retraction by Daily Independent Newspaper is an affirmation of the poor level of checks done by the media organisation in getting its facts right before heading to press.

According to the minister's lawyer, such defamatory publication with countless unverified allegations cannot just be wished away by a mere tweet.

Jonathan said the tweet by the media organisation did not show any form of contriteness for the enormity of damage the report has done to his client's reputation.

His word:

''The said retraction having not met our client’s demand leaves us with no option than to pursue every legal means to guard the hard-earned reputation of our client as earlier indicated in our letter of 12th April 2021.''

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in a reaction to the controversy surrounding Pantami's ties with terrorists said it cannot deny or confirm whether an individual is on its watch list.

The FBI said it will remain consistent with its policy on such matter as regards the minister of communication and digital economy.

Also, Pantami reacting to the allegation said he has never been on the US watch list as claimed by Daily Independent.

He also said that despite being at the forefront of Nigeria's and the global fight against terrorism, he has never been associated with such activities.
